Medieval History 500 - 1000 AD

As I continue my ramblings to my student regarding particular personalities of this time period, I have made some additional reading suggestions.  First, regarding the Barbarian hordes:

Here's a little piece I pulled about the Song of Roland:

"The Song of Roland: The poem, The Song of Roland, was written around 1100 CE. It is a story in poem form about  Charlemagne and two of his advisors, one of which is a brave and fearless warrior named Roland. Charlemagne was an incredibly popular subject for poems and ballads. He was such a colorful character. Many were also written about Charlemagne's 12 paladins - his 12 advisors - his council of warriors. Over time, the word paladin began to mean any hero in medieval Europe. 
The Song of Roland was especially popular because the bad guys in the poem were Muslims. As the poem goes, in spite of the magical horn Roland used to call his men to battle, the huge Moslem army surrounded Roland and his small band of men, and all were lost. When Charlemagne heard about it, he called upon God to help him, and destroyed the Muslim army in revenge.
         
This very famous 4,000 line poem was written right before the crusades. Since the crusaders were leaving to fight the Muslims, for the church and God, this poem really hit home. The popularity of The Song of Roland gave birth to a great many fanciful stories about the paladins in Charlemagne's time, as well as the paladins of this time, the time of great Crusaders."

We are now stretching out our studies some as I speak to him about different personalities from the time period 500 to 1000 AD.  You could use Greenleaf's Famous Men of the Middle Ages to cover some of these personalities (I believe someone else has out a newer copy of these now that include color illustrations, too).

World Geography Weeks 2 - 8 (North America, South America, Europe, Asia)

Combined with our continent studies each week, we work on some general geography skills such as learning to tell directions on a map (N, S, E, W); learning which continents are located in which hemispheres (northern, southern, eastern, western); learning about the equator as a line of demarcation on the earth; working with various land and water forms, etc.

In our second class, we touched on a variety of topics related to North America, including our neighbors Canada and Mexico.  We completed map work for all these countries, as well.  My sensory boxes contain dolls or puppets in traditional dress, native carvings, landmark cards, small animals from various Toobs (available from Safari, Ltd. at Michael's, Hobby Lobby and various other stores), CD's or tapes of native music, etc.  We don't have time to cover everything in these short classes, but we try!

Since North and South America both contain fewer countries, these make good places to start in memorizing countries (or at least some of the more notable ones).  I handed out a South American map that was labeled, along with a similar blank map so that they could color and cut out the blank and use it as practice for learning their countries.  Montessori maps for these countries or a large, simple puzzle would also work!
 
For South America, we talked a lot about the rainforest and its animals, but there are many topics that could be covered!  Time is our only real constraint for this class....  (I believe Chick-fil-a is currently handing out animal cards in its children's meals and those might make a good addition to sensory boxes).
 
I provided worry dolls to each child in my class, along with their story (Guatemala - North America) and small ocarina's when we studied South America (we watched online videos and listened to a CD I have of the group Andes Mante).
 
We continue to keep a passport book with stickers added for each continent we visit.  I also have some stamps I am sharing with them from various countries (flag stickers, animal stickers, etc.)  We continue to work on learning all the continents and oceans with a simple map each week (Montessori).

I also used additional map work from my geography file that I've used for years.  Enchanted Learning offers a LOT of geography worksheets of various sorts now that some might find useful.  Many of them would be appropriate for upper elementary, too.
 
I don't recall whether or not I've mentioned this, but each week the children in my class are also adding animal stickers to a globe that I got from Oriental Trading (Antarctica is spelled incorrectly):
 
 
I also obtained some flags of the world pencils and key chains from them that I will give out as we move through the class....

This past week, I also used some little books we collected from Chick-fil-a over the years.  One is on Children of Europe, and is taken from a DK book, and the other is about discovering London.
(You could use DK's Children Just Like Me or Celebrations!)  You could also use DK's Children Just Like Me: Our Favorite Stories for your story time readings.  We own all these books and love them all!  I am using the little books simply because they fit in my sensory boxes and I can pull them out easily while doing class....

Skin Intro

Integument comes from the Latin word integumentum , meaning "cover" or "enclosure."

In animals and plants, an integument is any natural outer covering, such as skin, shell, membrane, or husk. The human integumentary system is an external body covering, but also much more. It protects, nourishes, insulates, and cushions. It is absolutely essential to life. Without it, an individual would be attacked immediately by bacteria and die from heat and water loss.

The integumentary system is composed primarily of the skin and accessory structures. Those structures include hair, nails, and certain exocrine glands (glands that have ducts or tubes that carry their secretions to the surface of the skin or into body cavities for elimination).


Skin

Although the skin is not often thought of as an organ, such as the heart or liver, medically it is. An organ is any part of the body formed of two or more tissues that performs a specialized function.  Skins contains all four major tissue types.

As an organ, the skin is the largest and heaviest in the body. In an average adult, the skin covers about 21.5 square feet (2 square meters) and accounts for approximately 7 percent of body weight, or about 11 pounds (5 kilograms) in a 160-pound (73-kilogram) person.

It ranges in thickness from 0.04 to 0.08 inches (1 to 2 millimeters), but can measure up to 0.2 inches (6 millimeters) thick on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. The skin in these areas is referred to as thick skin (skin elsewhere on the body is called thin skin).

Apocrine sweat glands (AP-oh-krin): Sweat glands located primarily in the armpit and genital areas.

Arrector pili muscle (ah-REK-tor PI-li): Smooth muscle attached to a hair follicle that, when stimulated, pulls on the follicle, causing the hair shaft to stand upright.

Dermal papillae (DER-mal pah-PILL-ee): Finger-like projections extending upward from the dermis containing blood capillaries, which provide nutrients for the lower layer of the epidermis; also form the characteristic ridges on the skin surface of the hands (fingerprints) and feet.

Dermis (DER-miss): Thick, inner layer of the skin.

Eccrine sweat glands (ECK-rin): Body's most numerous sweat glands, which produce watery sweat to maintain normal body temperature.

Epidermis (ep-i-DER-miss): Thin, outer layer of the skin.

Epithelial tissue (ep-i-THEE-lee-al): Tissue that covers the internal and external surfaces of the body and also forms glandular organs.

Integument (in-TEG-ye-ment): In animals and plants, any natural outer covering, such as skin, shell, membrane, or husk.

Keratin (KER-ah-tin): Tough, fibrous, water-resistant protein that forms the outer layers of hair, calluses, and nails and coats the surface of the skin.

Lunula (LOO-noo-la): White, crescent-shaped area of the nail bed near the nail root.

Melanocyte (MEL-ah-no-site): Cell found in the lower epidermis that produces the protein pigment melanin.

Organ (OR-gan): Any part of the body formed of two or more tissues that performs a specialized function.

Sebaceous gland (suh-BAY-shus): Exocrine gland in the dermis that produces sebum.

Sebum (SEE-bum): Mixture of oily substances and fragmented cells secreted by sebaceous glands.

Squamous cells (SKWA-mus): Cells that are flat and scalelike.

Subcutaneous (sub-kew-TAY-nee-us): Tissues between the dermis and the muscles.

The skin has two principal layers: the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the thin, outer layer, and the dermis is the thicker, inner layer.

Beneath the dermis lies the subcutaneous layer or hypodermis, which is composed of adipose or fatty tissue. Although not technically part of the skin, it does anchor the skin to the underlying muscles. It also contains the major blood vessels that supply the dermis and houses many white blood cells, which destroy foreign invaders that have entered the body through breaks in the skin.
