I gave my student an activity on pirates and a couple of maps to look over; one included labeling the oceans of the world.

I also asked him to write a short report about what he thought of Don Quixote:

Was he a man of his time, behind the times, or ahead of the times?  Why?

Why do you think readers have loved the story of Don Quixote ever since it was written right down to present day?

What do you think of the length of the original book?  Have you heard the word "quixotic"?  What does it mean?  Do you think that is a good description of Don Quixote?
What are your opinions of Sancho Panza?

We are working on his timeline for this year and I AM going to manage to get a picture of it posted THIS year!

Wrapping up SOTW II, FINALLY!

At last!  We are finally wrapping up our book from last year so that we can get started on SOTW III.  I certainly hope our winter is not as bad this year!  With our late start and already being behind we will never get finished!

We are currently looking at the last topic in SOTW II:  England and Spain at War, ch. 42 (I think).  This means we get to finally start getting into PIRATES!  Hooray!

Stanley, Diane. Good Queen Bess : the story of Elizabeth I of England. New York : Four Winds Press, c1990.  (if not already read)

I also asked my student to practice writing backwards, as Leonardo did; I have a little pocket we can tuck that writing into on his timeline (you might try writing with your non-dominant hand, too; try writing in some sort of code, etc.)

I also asked him to tell me who his favorite pirate was of the 1500's and why....

We didn't start this year until after Labor Day, and began the year with a review of our last topical area from last year:  The Renaissance and Reformation.

The Genius of Leonardo

I reviewed a little from the end of the year last year, and gave my student a Mayan excavation kit left over from my days of homeschooling with my boys.  I don't see anything like it online at the moment, but I think I have seen similar kits at places such as Hobby Lobby.  Here are a couple of kits I do see that are related:

Rainbow Resource Center actually has a bunch of these!

I also gave him a Da Vinci Kit:

He built the model that was included in it and we are going to use the timeline to add to his timeline for the year.

There are many kits of models of various inventions of da Vinci that may be purchased from various sources.  I see that RRC carries this one, as well:

Sometimes Barnes and Noble or even Half Price Books will have such kits for a great price!  I think that I never paid more than $10 for any of mine and we used them for years!
