World Geography Weeks 2 - 8 (North America, South America, Europe, Asia)

Combined with our continent studies each week, we work on some general geography skills such as learning to tell directions on a map (N, S, E, W); learning which continents are located in which hemispheres (northern, southern, eastern, western); learning about the equator as a line of demarcation on the earth; working with various land and water forms, etc.

In our second class, we touched on a variety of topics related to North America, including our neighbors Canada and Mexico.  We completed map work for all these countries, as well.  My sensory boxes contain dolls or puppets in traditional dress, native carvings, landmark cards, small animals from various Toobs (available from Safari, Ltd. at Michael's, Hobby Lobby and various other stores), CD's or tapes of native music, etc.  We don't have time to cover everything in these short classes, but we try!

Since North and South America both contain fewer countries, these make good places to start in memorizing countries (or at least some of the more notable ones).  I handed out a South American map that was labeled, along with a similar blank map so that they could color and cut out the blank and use it as practice for learning their countries.  Montessori maps for these countries or a large, simple puzzle would also work!

For South America, we talked a lot about the rainforest and its animals, but there are many topics that could be covered!  Time is our only real constraint for this class....  (I believe Chick-fil-a is currently handing out animal cards in its children's meals and those might make a good addition to sensory boxes).

I provided worry dolls to each child in my class, along with their story (Guatemala - North America) and small ocarina's when we studied South America (we watched online videos and listened to a CD I have of the group Andes Mante).

We continue to keep a passport book with stickers added for each continent we visit.  I also have some stamps I am sharing with them from various countries (flag stickers, animal stickers, etc.)  We continue to work on learning all the continents and oceans with a simple map each week (Montessori).

I used a lot of the coloring sheets from Dover's Around the World coloring book as we studied Europe:

<p class="pzoomtext">See larger image</p>

I also used additional map work from my geography file that I've used for years.  Enchanted Learning offers a LOT of geography worksheets of various sorts now that some might find useful.  Many of them would be appropriate for upper elementary, too.

I don't recall whether or not I've mentioned this, but each week the children in my class are also adding animal stickers to a globe that I got from Oriental Trading (Antarctica is spelled incorrectly):

I also obtained some flags of the world pencils and key chains from them that I will give out as we move through the class....

Again, don't recall whether I've mentioned it, but this is also where I got the passports I'm using, although I'm adding additional stickers and stamps:

We read at least one little story each week from a country on the continent we are studying (if we have time).  I have primarily used a little book by Usborne:  Stories from Around the World:

Stories from around the world

This past week, I also used some little books we collected from Chick-fil-a over the years.  One is on Children of Europe, and is taken from a DK book, and the other is about discovering London.
(You could use DK's Children Just Like Me or Celebrations!)  You could also use DK's Children Just Like Me: Our Favorite Stories for your story time readings.  We own all these books and love them all!  I am using the little books simply because they fit in my sensory boxes and I can pull them out easily while doing class....

(This is the full version of a line of DK travel guides.  Chick-fil-a offered a much reduced version....)

These little true books, for continents or specific countries, are also good:

World Geography (again)!

I have found myself unexpectedly teaching World Geography to a small group of young children again this year.  I am going to use the geography boxes I made up last year, with some revisions (please see my post about this from last year:  http://greenapplesblush.blogspot.com/2012/09/intrepid-explorers-begins.html .)

For the first week, we looked at map work in general and I helped the children put together a little Kentucky Journal, containing some basic maps of Kentucky regions, states surrounding ours, etc. as well as lots of info on various state symbols.  They took these home with them and I encouraged them to keep them and make entries whenever they visit various places around the state.

If you don't want to make up your own notebook, you might use one such as the one I'm going to link for younger children:

https://secure.userfriendlyis.com/statehistory.net/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/25/products_id/58/

Here are some pics of the one I made up:

I found the state themed stickers at my local parent/teacher store.  These are notecard sized notebooks so they fit small hands well.  Any printed text that couldn't be cut to fit the page I simply folded....

Here are some of the general and state related books I suggested prior to the first class:

Adams, Simon. The most fantastic atlas of the whole wide world by the Brainwaves. London ;: DK Pub., 2008.

Geography. New York, NY : Kids Discover, 2011.

Gifford, Clive. The Kingfisher geography encyclopedia. New York : Kingfisher :, 2011.
Got geography! : poems. New York : Greenwillow Books, c2006.

Shulevitz, Uri. How I learned geography. New York : Farrar Straus Giroux, c2008. (Haven't gotten to look at this one yet, but it's an award winner.  I think it's about a refugee boy who taught himself geography.  Not sure it it's happy or sad, so you might want to pre-read....)

Smith, Rich. Kentucky. Edina, Minn. : ABDO Pub. Co., c2010.

Sweeney, Joan. Me on the map. New York : Crown, c1996.  (If everyone has read this one to death, then please skip it!  I know it has been well used by lots of schools, libraries, etc.)

Valzania, Kim. Kentucky. New York : Children's Press, 2003.

Wade, Mary Dodson. Types of maps. New York : Children's Press, c2003.

I also suggested these landform cards for them, which I utilized with some of the kids in my younger geology class last year:

www.superteacherworksheets.com  (These are listed under social studies: landforms - but are actually water form cards - I let the kids color them and wrote a simple definition on the back, then had them laminated at my local parent/teacher store.)

http://www.dynamic2moms.com/geography-countries (Montessori Landform cards that already include definitions on the back - these are in color, too - also had them laminated.)

For next week, we will be looking more in general at the various countries of North America and here is the booklist I suggested for that:

Here's a project I've been working on: Sensory Boxes

I have a grand-niece who just turned three and I've been working on putting together several sensory boxes for her so that her mother can begin some pre-school work with her at home.  Her mom and dad both work (and her dad is still in school, too), plus they have a new baby in the family, so I wanted to try to help them out a little.

Here are the boxes that I've created:

Animal friends - lots of matching activities here; two books of animal stories (one is a pop-up counting book); bear stamping activity with a non-toxic stamp pad (I've included a big pad of paper for activities, too); suction-cup gecko to stick on a window; pony finger puppet; bluebird water whistle....

And here is the box closed up.  I cut out various sizes and shapes of felt "leaves" to use as fill:

I made up an "itty-bitty Easter bucket" from some left-over stickers, etc. I had at home.  It is chock full of not just stickers, but also finger puppets and tiny dolls, a maze game, and a couple of books for Easter/spring season, including the classic Peter Rabbit....

I created a counting and sorting/patterning box that uses bright feathers as the fill.  There are large dice to use for number work, as well as numbers on some of the lacing beads (which come in a variety of shapes and colors).  I've included some extra, rainbow laces for the lacing work.  There's a dustpan to "sweep up," a set of flash cards for colors and shapes, and Eric Carle's book about colors....

Here is the box filled:

I created an "art" box that includes more sorting/patterning activities, as well as play dough (with molds), crayons and a big pad of paper, and a "messy mat" (brightly colored place mat).  I included a plastic bin for sorting the pom-poms that are included as "fill."   For fun, there are also a pair of purple sunglasses, an unusual sounding whistle, and rainbow ribbons cut to different sizes (both for wearing in play and for sorting out small, medium, and large (have three sizes of balls in there, too)....

I created an "insect safari" kit, where loads of plastic bugs are hiding in the paper "grass."  There's a felt butterfly mask for fun, as well as a sticky note pad of butterflies that can be attached to all surfaces (and re-used at least a few times).  There are tweezers for fine motor skill work (can be used with the pom-poms in the other kit, too).  Bugs can be collected in the net.  There's a magnifying glass for examining them and a bug's eye viewer to see what things look like from their perspective.  There's a book on butterflies (Let's-Read-and-Find-out-About-Science, level 1) and a butterfly/caterpillar kaleidoscope.  I've included ideas for sorting, patterning, etc.  The place mat seen here can also be used with the animal friends box....

Under the sea includes two lovely little mermaids (cat toys, of all things, but perfect in size, feel, etc.)  The place mat reminds me of a tropical lagoon (but could also be used with the bug box).  I included lots of shells and "sea glass" as my fill.  There's an assortment of tropical fish and a sea turtle that have been hanging out in our animal bin for years.  I included another stamp pad with some seashell stamps I had around the house, too (more patterning work in this box).  I got a little set of sand toys to include (which can also be used with play dough, used for tracing, etc.)  She can use the shovel to scoop up the shells and sea glass, too.  I included Eric Carle's Seahorse....

I created index lists to the contents of each box, as well as lists of ideas for activities and laminated those so that they will (hopefully) hold up well....

...and I'm also sending along a selection of nursery rhymes and lullabies, as well as a Little Golden Book about God that is a classic....

I've almost got everything finished and ready to ship off to them!
