Week 25 - 2012 - the week of storms....

So... we were caught up in the midst of storms last Wednesday and Friday.  I carried so much stuff to the basement that I spent the weekend hauling it back up again.  Then a heavy, wet snow - the most we've had all season (and heavy for us for any year) - was dumped on us Sunday night.  It was beautiful outside on Monday, but I feel badly for those who were dealing with loss of lives, homes, and goods who had to deal with it....

We saw our last play of the year, and what will probably be one of our last children's theatre performances, on Friday.  It was sort of sad because my boys have been attending that theatre and going to camps and workshops there since we moved here 13 years ago, but the youngest is outgrowing it....  I was afraid it was not going to be very age appropriate.  I've never read There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom.  I don't know how closely the play followed the book, but it was a very moving story!  I was very pleasantly surprised and my son enjoyed it....

Our first chemistry lab of the spring got post-poned because of the storms on Friday, but everything else proceeded as usual, so I won't bore you with details....

In addition to finishing up the books we already had underway, my son read some from People at Odds:  Israel and the Arab World, Heather Wagner, and from FACES magazine:  Israel: Finding a Lasting Peace.

I don't recall whether or not I mentioned that he finished up reading chapters 30 and 31 in Story of the World....

In science, they finished working through the Nutshell kit on Electrical Circuits and we went over more worksheets on magnetism and electricity.  I put together some review questions for them concerning simple machines, force and motion, sound and light waves and they completed most of those before we left class.  We finished up our discussion about electricity and how it gets to us, how it is stored, problems that could arise if we lose electricity for an extended period of time (no water, etc.) and also talked a little about geothermal energy.

He made pH indicator from red cabbage for his co-op class and we soaked coffee filters in it to make indicator paper.  We've been testing various other juices for their indicator properties, too (blueberry, etc.)

He got to bowl free on Wednesday afternoon.  We signed up for a 12 week after-school bowling league but they decided to push the official start back a week to provide time for more sign-ups.  Those kids already registered got to bowl free (and got a free water bottle and coupon for another free game for later!)  They have a coach there providing tips and everyone got their own lane, so they were able to bowl constantly.  It was good fun!
